此次任务实现了人类探测器首次月背软着陆、首次月背与地球的中继通信，开启了人类月球探测新篇章。这也是2013年“嫦娥三号”成功着陆月球正面之后，中国探测器再度造访月球，中国也因此成为世界上第一个在月球正面与背面均成功完成探测器软着陆的国家。
