Toyota has set its Chinese sales target for this year at 900,000 vehicles, the Beijing Times reported today. The figure is a full ten percent lower than the one million sales target it set, but failed to achieve, last year.

Toyota managed to sell just 840,000 vehicles in the country last year, far less than expectations and falling 14 percent of its one million sales goal. The lackluster performance was due mainly to rising tensions following the Diaoyu Island incident, which saw sales of Japanese goods in China fall to record lows. Commenting on the manufacturer’s performance, China Toyota representatives said that the 90,000 vehicles it sold in December represent a “relatively normal” sales level. However, when the manufacturer’s sales in the country will fully recover is difficult to predict.
